1. Alternate 9th Doctor
This is the one I'd most like to see. If you don't know,Richard E Grant played a cartoon Ninth Doctor before Christopher Eccleston was confirmed for the 2005 revival. This was in a webcast called "scream of the Shalka" was released in 2003. If this is done, this would make the 2003 cartoon canonical. In case you're wondering,I don't mean they should CGI the cartoon character in as frankly, that could look ridiculous and very out of place. I mean as in a live action version of the character. This 9th Doctor could be explained away as a alternate one from a parallel universe. I could see Steven Moffat doing this. It sounds like a very Moffat-esque idea.
2. A newly regenerated Master
So now we go on the good to bad bad beans scale from goody goody to BWA HA HA HA HA! Quite a few people have suggested this on the internet, and it's not hard to see why. Richard E Grant has a very Master-y look and you could easily imagine him as John Simm's predecessor. If this happens, though, there'd simply have to be a John Simms to Richard E Grant regeneration. I want to see John Simm appear before there's a new Master.
3. Clara's father
This is by far the most likely one. Richard E Grant looks very fatherly in the photo above, which whilst it isn't a official series 7 promo picture,it still shows he is able to be seen as fatherly. Then there is the fact that Doctor Who has always featured the families of it's companions over the years:most notably in the new series. So don't be surprised if Richard E Grant turns out to be the constantly nagging father of Clara.
4.Himself
Ok.this one's unlikely but people have appeared as themselves before.Paul O Grady appeared as himself in a clip from the Paul O Grady show. A american newsreader appeared as herself. So why not Richard E Grant? Is it something Moffat would do,though? I'm not so sure, but you never know.
5.Someone else
When it comes to Doctor Who,there's all kinds of endless possibilities when it comes to characters. For all we know,Richard E Grant could be playing a time travelling meerkat,or a human tadpole or even Jesus. Maybe the winner of Superstar shocks Andrew Lloyd Webber backstage at Jesus Christ Superstar by regenerating into Richard E Grant before he's eyes? Who knows? We'll have to wait till Who-mas(I mean christmas) day to find out...
